Weird things we all did as kids but never talk about

The mind of a child works in wonderful and mysterious ways. Their imaginations run freely, untethered by the bounds of logic or fact. A simple cardboard box can become a fantasy world in another dimension, and a bottle of Coke can become a glass of Pinot. While habits vary greatly between different countries and cultures, there are certain experiences that most of us can relate to. Children are children wherever they are, and as such, they seem to be drawn to the same things. That means that you, your cousin, and that kid in class who used to eat erasers, all had many of the same weird, awkward experiences. Click through the gallery for a nostalgic and perhaps cringe-inducing look back at the bizarre things we all did as kids but haven't talked about since!

The most memorable men's looks at the Met Gala

For decades, celebrities have walked down the red (or pink) carpet at the Met Gala, arguably the most important fashion event of the year. In the past, a nice tux was a passable wardrobe choice, but these days, it's an opportunity for men to live out their wildest fashion fantasies. Gender norms need not apply. The 2023 edition's theme honored the late, great Karl Lagerfeld, and the stars did not disappoint. Jared Leto came dressed as Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette, while Lil Nas X looked like a dazzling alien in head-to-toe diamonds and glitter. Bad Bunny and Pedro Pascal served up daring twists on classic suits, with Pascal wearing a stunning red coat over black shorts, and Bad Bunny wearing an open-backed blazer with a floral shawl. As men's fashion evolves and the restrictions of tradition fall by the wayside, the looks get better with each passing year. The theme for 2024 is 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' while the dress code is 'The Garden of Time.' The boys are sure to deliver on May 6! In the meantime, let's take a look back at the best male looks in Met Gala history so far. Click through the gallery to get started.

Responses to "how are you" are so much better than "fine"

The question “How are you?” can be so pure on its own, but over time and extensive use it has become something of a mindless greeting, often met with the equally mindless response, “I’m fine, and you?” Sometimes that response comes from feeling that the other person isn't looking for a real answer, and sometimes it's because people don't want to go around telling just anyone how they really are. But if you're not interested in telling the truth, then instead of blasé interactions you can still subvert people’s expectations and give them a response that they’ll laugh about for days! Click through to see some of the wittiest, silliest, and cleverest responses to the ubiquitous question that will spice up your dreaded small talk.

These Insanely Helpful Garden Plants Keep the Mosquitoes Away

Say goodbye to the outdoor pests. Bugs come with the territory when you’re outdoors, but some are more tolerable than others. If it feels like mosquitoes are invading your yard, it’s understandable to want to do what you can to get rid of them. Enter mosquito repellent plants. Here’s the thing: Experts say that the best way to keep mosquitoes at bay is to use personal repellents recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But if you want to go a more natural route, you may be interested in selecting certain plants—they’re just not necessarily guaranteed to work as well as a spray. “The idea that planting certain plants around your home will successfully repel mosquitoes is only supported by anecdotal evidence and not empirical evidence,” says Eva Buckner, Ph.D., assistant professor and state extension specialist at the University of Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory. It’s important to note, though, that there is some evidence that certain plants may help discourage certain mosquitoes from setting up camp in your yard—they just don’t work as well as a chemical or spray. If it feels like your outdoor space is a haven to mosquitoes, it’s a good idea to “eliminate mosquito breeding grounds on and around your property by draining standing water from flowerpots, birdbaths, grill covers, baby pools, and other sources,” says Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., board-certified entomologist and senior vice president of public affairs at the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). Using a small fan outside may also help keep mosquitoes away since “they are not strong flyers,” Fredericks says. But if you like the look and smell of certain plants and want to see if they keep the mosquitoes away, too, there’s no reason not to try them. These are the plants fans swear are most likely to help get rid of mosquitoes. Snap up one or a few to enhance your outdoor space.
