New cat species discovered for first time in over 100 years

Scientists have identified a new species of wild cat in Bolivia, marking the first completely new living cat species discovered in more than a century. Named Leopardus tilcayo, or tilcayo, the small spotted tiger cat lives in the Yungas cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes. The tilcayo weighs around three pounds (1.4 kg) and measures about 18 inches (46 cm) from its head to the end of its body, making it smaller than the average domestic cat. It has light brown fur, large leopard-like markings, short rounded ears, and long whiskers. The only known living tilcayo was originally mistaken for a domestic kitten after being found near a forest. Researchers eventually used genetic analysis to confirm that it was a distinct species, part of a wider discovery showing that South America’s tiger cats actually comprise five separate species. Scientists still know very little about how many tilcayos survive in the wild. From newly discovered wild cats to unusual domestic breeds, the feline family is far more diverse than the familiar Siamese or Persian. Curious? Click on to discover some of the rarest cats around.
